Vergenoegd Löw Hotel

Luxury In The Cape West Coast

As we embarked on our journey to discover new hotels in South Africa, we stumbled upon Vergenoegd Löw Boutique Hotel & Spa and knew that this was the perfect place to lay our hat and explore the Western Cape region.

Nestled between the Helderberg Mountains and False Bay, the hotel is situated on one of the oldest working wine farms in South Africa, with a rich history dating back to 1696.

The moment we set foot on the property, we were enchanted by its serene beauty and the feeling of being transported back in time. The lush indigenous plants, birds, and insects added to the natural splendour of the property and we couldn’t help but take pictures of these beautiful creatures.

The duck run was particularly fascinating, and we had the pleasure of speaking to one of the people who take care of the ducks on the farm. We were impressed to learn that their Indian Runner Duck had recently been crowned as the breed champion at the Worcester show. It was clear that the Vergenoegd Löw Wine Estate takes great care of both their people and the environment, and we were truly moved by their dedication.

As we made our way to Geuwels for breakfast, we were greeted by Angelo, the manager of the estate, who shared more about the history of this hotel. He truly made us feel welcome and went above and beyond to ensure that our stay was as comfortable and enjoyable as possible. The warmth and kindness of the staff made us feel like we were part of the family.

Our experience reached new heights when we checked into the Presidential Suite. The 140 square metres of luxury was beyond our wildest expectations. The wind lobby and foyer, complete with a mini bar and powder room, set the tone for the rest of the suite.

The lounge was furnished with a 10-seater dining table and leather couches, and the bedroom featured an extra length super king size bed. The bathroom was a true oasis, with a dual access rain shower, hand shower, free-standing bathtub, double basin, enclosed toilet, and heated towel rail. It’s fair to say, we were living the high life!

One of the highlights of our stay was indulging in a couples massage at the luxury spa. The spa offered panoramic views and outdoor tranquillity paired with the hotel’s award-winning wines. The natural oils used in the massage left us feeling rejuvenated and refreshed. It was truly a relaxing and rejuvenating experience that we will always cherish.

The culinary experience at the Clara’s Barn Restaurant was truly a feast for the senses. The flavours and presentation were out of this world, and we indulged in a 5-course menu that honestly felt like a 20-course meal. From the succulent prawn cocktail to the mouth-watering Upside-down Souttert, Braised Rabbit, and Amasi Tortellini for starters, the deliciously tender Yellowtail from the braai as the main course, and the heavenly Tropical Pavlova and Dalewood Cheeses that were served with a trolley.

As a bread lover, one of my favourite parts was the Lowerland Focaccia – it was honestly better than anything I’ve ever tried in Europe. I couldn’t help but think, “this bread is the bee’s knees!”.

The Indigenous wine tasting in the Historic Homestead dated back to 1773 was an experience we will never forget. The wines were expertly paired with the flavors of the estate, and the knowledge of the wine guide added to the experience. One note that I picked up from our wine expert was that “Wine making starts in the vineyard, not the cellar” which really struck a chord with me.

The estate’s vineyard and cellar teams are true craftsmen, steeped in tradition, dedicated to detail. The farm operates with a deep respect for the land, its creatures, and the environment. They prioritise eco-friendly practices such as recycling, solar energy, composting, and low-water irrigation. When it comes to protecting our vineyards, they’ve found a unique solution that aligns with their values. The working flock of 1000 Indian Runner Ducks act as natural pest control, happily dining on snails and keeping the farm free from harm.

Overall, our experience at Vergenoegd Löw Hotel was one of the most luxurious and personal experiences we have ever had. From the serene beauty of the estate to the delicious food and wine, everything was perfect. The hotel’s commitment to preserving the environment and showcasing the local culture added a personal touch that made our stay truly memorable. We left with memories that we will treasure forever, and a desire to come back and relive the magic.
